Local Business Owner Wants to Buy 1000 Comic Books for Children in Need
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - As the owner of Ssalefish Comics, it’s not enough for Bret Parks to work with Superheroes every day as part of his job -- the business owner wants to imitate their good deeds here in the real world, too.
Parks will host Twin City Comic Con on Sunday, April 8 at the Millenium Center in Downtown Winston-Salem.
And for every ticket he sells to his event, Parks will use the proceeds to purchase four brand new comic books for an elementary student attending a Title One school in Forsyth County.
“Across the country, Public Education is constantly at risk of losing funding, and businesses need to step up where they can to help build leaders of tomorrow,” Parks said. “I thought an initiative that’s designed to boost literacy by giving kids something they would actually enjoy reading was the perfect way for me to get involved.”
Title One schools are public schools wherein a high percentage of children come from low-income families.
Parks’ donation plan is part of Comics for Kids, a campaign that is designed to purchase comic books for kids in Title One schools across the Triad. This year, Comics for Kids will be donating brand new comic books to schools in Greensboro, High Point, Lexington and, thanks to Parks, Winston-Salem.
“We saw the goal of raising 1,000 comic books as a solid goal because Superman is celebrating 1,000 issues of Action Comics this summer,” Parks says. “And what better way to celebrate Superman’s milestone than to do a really good deed for the city where we live?”
Twin City Comic Con will take place at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 8 at the Millenium Center on 101 W. 5th Street in Downtown Winston-Salem. The event will feature vendors, artists, a live DJ, a cosplay contest, and a lineup of comic book creator guests that include Karl Waller, Chris Giarrusso, Brian Shearer, Brian Smith, Nic Rummel, Richard Rivera and Dwayne Biddix.
Tickets are $10 for adults and free for children 12 & under and can be purchased at the door or online at www.ssalefish.net/twcc.
The first 400 people to purchase a standard adult admission will also get a free limited edition copy of the Shadowman #1 comic book with an exclusive cover illustrated by convention guest Giarrusso.
