‘Super’ Nintendo Fan Convention Heading for Downtown Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC – This November, Downtown Greensboro will be swarming with fans of Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Pikachu as well as the rest of the beloved characters from the Nintendo family.

The owners of Geeksboro Coffee and Beverage Company as well as Mixed Tape Enterprises will host Super FamiCon, a Nintendo fan convention and tournament series. This debut event will take place on Saturday and Sunday November 19-20 at the Elm Street Center on 203 South Elm St. in Downtown Greensboro.

Joe Scott, co-owner of Geeksboro and Creative Director of Mixed Tape Enterprises has been hosting a variety of game tournaments since Geeksboro first opened in 2012. He says that while many video games have devoted followings, Nintendo games are unique in the way that they appeal to a wide variety of audiences on a deeply emotional level.

“Whether it’s through Mario and Pikachu or even lesser-known characters like Kirby or StarFox, Nintendo appeals to a young adults and children today on the same, iconic level that characters like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny did for our parents and grandparents,” Scott says.

A riff on Super Famicom, the Japanese name for the Super Nintendo video game system that roughly means ‘Super Family Computer,’ Super FamiCon is designed to be a celebration of the Nintendo Family -- both in terms of its wide variety of beloved characters as well as the company’s real-world community of devotees.

“I frequently hear fans of Nintendo refer to each other as a family,” Scott says. “My goal for Super FamiCon is for it to be a celebration of Nintendo’s unique culture of inclusion that transcends age as well as gender, race, class and ethnicity.”

Super FamiCon will feature video game tournaments for a variety of Nintendo hits including “Super Smash Bros.” and “Mario Kart,” where top players from across the region will compete for cash prizes. The two-day event will also include high score competitions, speed-runs, video game retailers, clothing and apparel vendors, artists, guest panels, live music, a Nintendo-themed cosplay competition, door prizes and more.

Complete details for all of Super FamiCon’s tournaments and events will be announced throughout the summer and autumn on their website, www.SuperFamiCon.com. Fans will also be able to purchase advanced tickets, beginning July 31st.
